Neuromuscular Movement Correction

Neuromuscular Movement Correction (NMC)

Neuromuscular Movement Correction – What Is It?

Neuromuscular Movement Correction is a sophisticated neurology based bodywork modality. It’s a therapeutic approach designed to retain the connection between the brain, nerves and muscles to restore, improve or correct movement patterns, coordination and balance. It focuses on improving the efficiency of movement by training the nervous system to better activate muscle fibers, reducing compensation strategies that lead to pain and injury. By using visual and other simuli (e.g. strokes, light pressure etc.) the practitioner is able to detect and treat receptor dysfunctions that can be the root cause for pain or limitation in the range of movement.

Receptors are specialised cells, or a group of nerve endings that detect a change in the environment and, as a response to specific sensory stimuli, they send the new information up to the brain. Upon receipt and interpretation of this new information the brain makes a decision and sends instructions to specific muscles to contract or relax in order to create the desired or necessary movement.

The normal functioning of these receptors can be altered by injuries, surgeries and/or environmental stressors making them hyper-active. The abnormal signalling of these receptors affects the instructions the brain sends to specific muscles making these dysfunctional. Once muscles lose the optimal way of functioning discomfort, pain and/or limitation in the range of motion will follow.

What To Expect From Treatment

In the session the practitioner uses images and manual muscle testing to tap into the dysfunction that led to the symptoms presented, and to determine the nervous pathway that is affected. Once it is clear what type of sensory receptor is responsible for the movement dysfunction, the practitioner is using images and a specific sensory stimulus to calm the receptor activity and thus change the dysfunctional tone in the affected muscle(s).

As compensation patterns can be very complex affecting many anatomical structures, this technique (however spooky it seems at first) often proves to be the fastest way to a global re-set.

Post-Treatment & Rehab

Rehab exercises may be given in some cases to help further improve specific muscle functions.
